Stephen D Girvin is a tenured full Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore (NUS), serving as MPA Professor of Maritime Law since 2015 and Director of the Centre for Maritime Law (CML) since 2015. He holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen and prior academic roles at the Universities of Aberdeen, Nottingham, Birmingham, and visiting positions globally. His expertise spans maritime law, international commercial law, and legal history.
Research interests include commercial maritime law, shipping contracts, environmental regulations in shipping, and maritime legal history. He leads CML, recognized as a leading maritime law research hub in Asia-Pacific. Publications include Carriage of Goods by Sea (OUP, 2022) and Carver on Charterparties (2021). He is editor of the upcoming six-volume Elgar Encyclopedia of Maritime and Oceans Law (2026).
Professional roles include Singapore Overseas Correspondent for Lloyd’s Maritime & Commercial Law Quarterly, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), and memberships in maritime law associations. Courses taught include Admiralty Law, Carriage of Goods by Sea, and Charterparties.
