Professor Stephen Cummings is Dean of the School of Science, Engineering & Design and holds a Chair in Microbiology at Teesside University. He earned his Biological Sciences degree from Plymouth Polytechnic and a PhD in Microbial Physiology from the University of Sheffield. His research focuses on microbial communities in polymicrobial infections, utilizing omics technologies and mathematical models to study diseases like cystic fibrosis and necrotizing enterocolitis. He leads the NIHR EME-funded MAGPIE project examining preterm infant gut mechanisms. Editor of Journal of Applied Microbiology and Letters in Applied Microbiology, he collaborates with global institutions including Newcastle Medical School and Baylor College of Medicine.
