Stephen Cramer is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Vermont, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds an M.A. in Creative Writing from City College of New York (1998) and a B.A. in Creative Writing from Lycoming College (1997), with a junior semester at Westminster College in Oxford, England. His research focuses on 20th-century and contemporary poetry, creative writing pedagogy, and the intersection of poetry with music and cultural history.
As an award-winning poet, Cramer has published eight books of poetry, including Bone Music (2016, Louise Bogan Award winner) and The Disintegration Loops (2021, Vermont Book Award nominee). His work appears in journals like American Poetry Review, Harvard Review, and Yale Review. He also serves as Assistant Poetry Editor at Green Mountains Review.
In addition to his creative output, Cramer teaches courses such as Advanced Writing: Poetry, Jazz Poetry, and Responding to Music in Poetry. His grants include a UVM Faculty Development Grant (2018) and a Vermont Arts Council Creation Grant (2007). He frequently gives readings and lectures across the U.S., including at the Burlington Book Festival and Fordham University.
