Stephen Cowen, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cognition/Neural Systems at the University of Arizona's College of Engineering, where he directs the Decision Making and Learning Laboratory. His research focuses on neural mechanisms underlying cognitive processes, motor behavior, and neurodegenerative disease models.
- Current faculty member (not former or retired)
- Active in neuroscience research involving dopamine signaling, theta oscillations, and Parkinson's disease models
Research Interests include:
- Neural oscillations in cognition and movement
- Dopamine dynamics in reward and disease
- Neurochemical interventions for Parkinson's dyskinesia
- Age-related neural changes
- Sleep's role in memory consolidation
Recent Publications highlight:
- 2025 work on hippocampal theta oscillations and motor behavior
- Ketamine's therapeutic effects in Parkinson's models
- Neural correlates of aging and cognitive decline
- Advanced behavioral analysis systems for rodents
Laboratory: The Decision Making and Learning Laboratory develops preclinical models for understanding neural basis of decision-making and motor dysfunction.
