Stephen Connor serves as the Grace 2 Professor of English at the University of Cambridge and has been Director of CRASSH (Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities) since 2018. Previously, he held the position of Professor of Modern Literature and Theory at Birkbeck College, London (1994-2012) and served as Academic Director of the London Consortium Graduate Programme (2003-2012). His institutional affiliations include the Conservation Research Institute, where he contributes to themes of Knowledge and Expertise in Conservation and The Values of Nature.
He completed his academic foundation with a BA and DPhil in English at Wadham College, Oxford, earning his doctorate in 1980.
Professor Connor's research bridges English Literature with Conservation studies, focusing particularly on modern literature and theory through the lens of cultural heritage and environmental values. His interdisciplinary approach integrates Humanities and Cultural Studies to examine epistemological frameworks in conservation practices and the socio-ethical dimensions of nature valuation.
As Director of CRASSH, he leads a major interdisciplinary research hub fostering collaboration across arts, humanities, and social sciences. His concurrent role at the Conservation Research Institute demonstrates strategic engagement with global conservation challenges, emphasizing the critical role of humanities perspectives in developing sustainable conservation methodologies and policies.
