Professor Stephen Cattle is a Professor in Soil Science at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Sydney. He is a member of the Sydney Institute of Agriculture and has held administrative roles such as Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning) and Chair of the Academic Board's Undergraduate Studies Committee. His research focuses on soil formation processes, soil degradation, and the role of aeolian dust in soil development.
Education: BScAgr (Hons I) from the University of Sydney (1991), PhD in Soil Science (1995).
Research interests include dust's influence on soil formation, agriculturally significant soils in NSW, soil judging competitions, and soil health management. His work spans pedology, environmental geochemistry, and sustainable agricultural practices. Recent studies address soil carbon dynamics, inorganic carbon mapping, and contamination mitigation in urban and agricultural soils.
Notable grants include projects on dryland cotton research (2024), cover crop guidelines (2023), and soil security initiatives. His publications emphasize spatial-temporal soil monitoring, loess deposits, and heavy metal bioaccessibility.
