Stephen C. Levinson is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, The Netherlands (since 1994) and Professor of Comparative Linguistics at Radboud University Nijmegen (since 1995). Previously, he served as Managing Director at MPI (1998-2001, 2007-2008), Reader at University of Cambridge's Department of Linguistics (until 1994), and Head of the Max Planck Cognitive Anthropology Research Group (1989-1997).
His education includes:
- BA in Social Anthropology (First Class Honours) from University of Cambridge (1967-70)
- MA in Linguistic Anthropology from UC Berkeley (1973)
- Doctorate in Linguistic Anthropology from UC Berkeley (1977) with thesis: "Social Deixis in a Tamil Village"
Levinson's research spans multiple intersecting domains of language and cognition:
- Interactional sociolinguistics examining social context in communication
- Cognitive anthropology exploring cultural models of thought
- Spatial cognition investigating language's role in spatial reasoning
- Linguistic typology through documentation of diverse languages
His scholarly honors include:
- Fellow of the British Academy (1988)
- Member of Academia Europaea (2003-)
- Stirling Prize from American Anthropology Association (1992)
- Hale Professorship from Linguistic Society of America (2009)
- Multiple visiting professorships at Stanford and UC Santa Barbara
He has led significant research initiatives as head of the Max Planck Cognitive Anthropology Group and received prestigious fellowships including Fulbright (1970-75) and Stanford CASBS (2001).
