Stephen Broomer

Stephen Broomer is a Sessional Instructor at the University of Toronto. He is a filmmaker, writer, and film preservationist specializing in Canadian experimental cinema. His work bridges artistic practice and scholarly research, with a focus on avant-garde film traditions and cultural history.

• Educational Background: Postdoctoral Fellow at Brock University's Centre for Canadian Studies (sponsored by the International Council of Canadian Studies); Fulbright Visiting Scholar at UC Santa Cruz and the Prelinger Library (2020).

Research interests include film preservation, Canadian avant-garde cinema, and the poetics of home movies. His recent projects explore marginal cinematic forms and subversive media practices, including his web series Art & Trash. He has curated retrospectives at institutions like New York's Anthology Film Archives and authored critical works on figures such as Arthur Lipsett.

Current teaching includes CIN230H1F: The Business of Film for the 2025/26 academic year.
