Dr Stephen Bernard is an Academic Visitor at University College, Oxford, specializing in Early Modern and 18th-Century book history, publishing practices, and Whig literary culture. His work focuses on the Tonson publishing house and its role in shaping literary networks. He holds the Katherine F Pantzer Jr. Research Fellowship in Bibliography and has authored award-winning studies like The Literary Correspondences of the Tonsons (2015), which won the MLA Morton N Cohen Award.
His research interests span bibliography, historical editing, and the intersection of politics and literature in early modern England. Current projects include editing the Churchill brothers' correspondence and studying Whig literary culture's impact on fine publishing. He collaborates with institutions like the Bibliographical Society and Manchester University Press.
