Stephen Benard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Indiana University. He has previously served as a Visiting Researcher in the Research Area Dynamics of Social Inequalities, Research Department Skill Formation and Labor Markets, and the Research Professorship Work, Family and Social Inequality. His research focuses on intergroup relations, particularly status, conflict, identity, and inequality. Current projects include NSF-funded studies exploring how intergroup revenge and forgiveness influence social status, as well as analyzing Asian stereotypes in the U.S. and their societal implications.
Education: Holds a Ph.D. in Sociology.
Research Interests: Explores how group dynamics shape societal hierarchies through lenses of conflict resolution, identity formation, and systemic inequality. Specializes in the psychological and structural mechanisms underlying intergroup dynamics.
Grants & Funding: Recipient of National Science Foundation grants supporting research on intergroup revenge/forgiveness and Asian stereotypes.
Affiliations: Formerly affiliated with research institutions in Berlin, Germany, including roles at Reichpietschufer 50 (room E212).
