Stephen conducts interdisciplinary research on religion’s role in peacebuilding, particularly examining integrated inter-faith approaches to counter-violent extremism (CVE) in Kenya. His 2022 project analyzed the Coast Interfaith Council of Clerics of Kenya (CICC-K) as a case study for integrating belief-oriented frameworks to combat Al-Shabaab radicalization. His work challenges liberal secular perspectives that marginalize religious actors in global security discourses.
Stephen has held visiting research positions at the University of Leeds (2021) and the University of Macerata (2022) under the Erasmus Mundus program. His recent publication, Mixing Religious Logics in Peacebuilding, explores the ‘hidden costs’ of non-state religious actors’ limited collaboration with Kenyan state institutions in CVE efforts.

Stephen’s work underscores the necessity of integrating religious knowledge, values, and attitudes into national security frameworks. His research bridges theological studies, political science, and conflict resolution, emphasizing the potential of inter-religious actors in de-radicalization efforts.
