Stephanus Huijbregts is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurodevelopmental Sciences at Leiden University, specializing in the interplay between cognition, social functioning, and neurobiological processes. His research spans typically developing children, those with psychopathology (aggression/antisocial behavior, substance use), genetic syndromes (NF1, PKU, TT1), and perinatal risk factors. Affiliated with the Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition since 2010, he leads interdisciplinary projects integrating near-infrared spectroscopy, neuroimaging, and longitudinal assessments.
- Education: PhD in Clinical Neuropsychology (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 2002), Psychology (Leiden University, Cognitive Psychology), postdoctoral research (Université de Montréal, 2003-2004), Lecturer (University of Southampton, 2005-2009)
His research on genetic syndromes (NF1, PKU, TT1) and environmental risks (prenatal tobacco exposure) has yielded over 97 publications. Key projects include grants from Leiden University Fund, NWO, ZonMW, and international collaborations on European PKU guidelines. He has supervised 9 PhD candidates, including studies on executive function in PKU, social cognition in NF1, and stress reactivity in prenatal risk populations.
Scientific Awards:
- Teva/Aventis Young Investigator Award (2004) for Multiple Sclerosis research
His work emphasizes the role of executive functions, autonomic nervous system reactivity, and early intervention in shaping developmental outcomes. Current activities include editorial roles, grant reviewing, and organizing international conferences on behavioral phenotypes.
