Dr Stephanie Valentin is an Associate Professor in Physiotherapy at Edinburgh Napier University's School of Health and Social Care, where she joined in January 2023. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Chartered Physiotherapist (MCSP) specializing in biomechanics and musculoskeletal health. She primarily teaches on the MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) program and maintains active research collaborations across multiple institutions.
Her educational background includes a BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy from Robert Gordon University (2001) and a PhD from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna (2011-2015) focusing on comparative bipedal and quadrupedal spinal biomechanics. Her career path spans clinical practice in NHS Grampian (2001-2009), research coordination at the University of Queensland on whiplash associated disorders, and academic positions at the University of the West of Scotland (2015-2023) before her current role.
Dr Valentin's research interests center on spinal biomechanics, low back pain mechanisms, and sports medicine applications, with recent work expanding into women's health in athletics, particularly menstrual cycle impacts on football performance. Her work bridges clinical practice with biomechanical analysis, using advanced techniques including MRI analysis, motion capture, and ergonomic assessment. She has developed expertise in both human and comparative (equine) biomechanics, demonstrating a unique interdisciplinary approach to movement science.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward applied clinical research with direct patient care implications, particularly in low back pain assessment and management. The work on paraspinal muscle epimuscular fat represents cutting-edge biomechanical analysis of pain mechanisms, while her systematic review on the Y-balance test provides crucial context for clinical application. Her expanding interest in women's sports medicine is evident in multiple 2023-2025 publications examining menstrual cycle impacts on athletic performance.
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
- Chartered Physiotherapist (MCSP)
Dr Valentin actively supervises PhD students including Grace Mukoka (Commonwealth Scholarship Commission funded project on physiotherapy interventions for low back pain in the UK and Malawi) and Tom McKeever (investigating head injury protocols in youth contact sports). She has secured significant research funding including a £53,124 Commonwealth Scholarship Commission award. Her current projects address critical gaps in understanding low back pain interventions across different healthcare systems and head injury management in youth sports.
Her research bridges clinical practice with biomechanical analysis, maintaining connections with both human healthcare settings and comparative biomechanics laboratories. This unique interdisciplinary approach allows her to translate findings across species and settings, enhancing the applicability of her work to diverse clinical scenarios.
