Stephanie Nitsch serves as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Comparative Private Law with a special focus on Environmental Private Law at the University of Vienna's Department of European, International and Comparative Law. She leads the Research Centre for Environmental Law and participates in the Environment and Climate Research Hub (ECH).
Her research examines how private law mechanisms can address environmental challenges through litigation and regulatory frameworks. Key areas include PFAS/microplastics litigation, climate change liability cases, supply chain responsibility, and legal remedies for greenwashing in consumer marketing. She investigates housing law adaptations to climate transformation and legal responses to environmental activism.
Dr. Nitsch directs two major projects: 'From Lab to Litigation' analyzes scientific evidence translation in environmental court cases since the 1960s, while 'Green and Tempting?' explores anti-greenwashing strategies in marketing. Her interdisciplinary teaching includes the 'Climate Law in Intra- and Interdisciplinary Dialogue' lecture series featuring experts from law, natural sciences, and humanities.
She supervises research teams across multiple projects and teaches the Moot Court Environmental Law, which simulates infrastructure approval processes. Her consultation hours operate by appointment at the Juridicum building (Room R528), with active collaboration across European institutions including the University of Helsinki.
