Stephanie Lo is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Milner Centre for Evolution. Her research focuses on bacterial genome analysis, particularly in understanding evolutionary dynamics of pathogens in response to vaccines and antimicrobial usage. She leads the Global Pneumococcal Sequencing (GPS) project, analyzing over 26,000 pneumococcal genomes globally to study vaccine evasion and inform public health strategies. Her work on antimicrobial resistance highlights transmission pathways between humans and food animals in Southeast Asia, aiming to mitigate resistance spread.
Education:
- PhD in Medical Microbiology, University of Hong Kong (2007–2011)
- Bachelor of Medicine in Medical Laboratory Science, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2002–2007)
Research Interests: Molecular epidemiology of bacterial pathogens, genomic surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, and translational strategies to improve vaccine design. Key areas include pneumococcal evolution, plasmid-mediated resistance mechanisms, and global health applications.
Collaborations: Partnering with over 160 global scientists, her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and sustainable development. She holds an external position as Translational Science Lead at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Milner Centre for Evolution and collaborates with the Wellcome Sanger Institute, focusing on genomic epidemiology and pathogen evolution.
