Stephanie Kirk

Stephanie Kirk is a Professor of Spanish, Comparative Literature, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. She currently serves as Director of the Center for the Humanities. Her research focuses on colonial Latin American literature and culture, with particular emphasis on gender studies and religious dynamics. She holds a PhD from New York University.

Education: PhD in Spanish Literature, New York University.

Research interests include gender politics in colonial Mexico, the role of religion in power structures, and Indigenous resistance through language and translation. Her work explores how marginalized voices navigated colonial oppression, particularly through motivated mistranslation as a form of cultural negotiation.

Recent contributions include co-editing a special issue of Colonial Latin American Review on translation and resistance, analyzing case studies from the Americas and beyond. She is also preparing a translation of Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora’s Paraíso occidental.

Labs/Teams: Editor of Revista de Estudios Hispánicos. Collaborations include interdisciplinary projects bridging Latin American colonial studies, Jewish history, and art history.
