Akiko Tsuchiya is Professor of Spanish at Washington University in St. Louis, with affiliations in Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies and the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity. She specializes in 19th-20th century Spanish literature, gender studies, and transnational cultural networks.
Research Focus: Examines Spanish realism/naturalism, women's literary networks, slavery/antislavery in the Hispanic world, and colonial monument debates. Her work integrates postcolonial theory and public memory studies.
Publications: Recent books include Marginal Subjects: Gender and Deviance in Fin-de-siècle Spain (2011) and co-edited volumes on empire and colonialism. Her NEH-funded project explores Spanish women in antislavery movements.
