Stephanie Hofmann

Stephanie Hofmann is Full-time Professor and Joint Chair in International Relations at the European University Institute, with dual affiliation to the Department of Political and Social Sciences and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies where she directs the Europe in the World research area. She leads seminars and workshops on global governance and security architectures.

Her research examines:

• Organizational expressions of multilateralism and global ordering processes
• Crisis management in security and cyberspace domains
• Co-evolution of European security organizations
• Ideological foundations of security preferences
• Transatlantic relations in changing geopolitical contexts

Recent publications (2025) analyze regime complexity, institutional adaptation during crises, European security architectures, and EU global governance strategies, reflecting consistent focus on multilateralism challenges.

She leads significant research initiatives:

• ADHOCISM (2021-2025): Investigating ad-hoc coalitions in crisis response
• ENSURED: Enhancing multilateral governance robustness
• Decentering Eurocentrism interdisciplinary cluster

Currently advises 12 doctoral researchers on topics spanning international organizations, security governance, and foreign policy. Engages extensively with policy institutions through advisory roles at the Institut für Friedensforschung und Sicherheitspolitik (Hamburg) and Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (Berlin).
