Stephanie DeGooyer

Stephanie DeGooyer is Associate Professor and Frank Borden and Barbara Lasater Hanes Fellow of English and Comparative Literature at UNC Chapel Hill, with joint appointment in Global Studies. She specializes in 18th-century legal/literary history and theories of the novel. DeGooyer earned a PhD from Cornell University, MA from University of Toronto, and BA from University of Ottawa. Major works include Before Borders: A Legal and Literary History of Naturalization and The Right to Have Rights.

Her research examines foundational legal systems (common/international law) and their contemporary impacts. Current projects investigate asylum law history and unidentified bodily remains in social/political contexts.
