Stephanie Baumann is an Associate Professor of German Studies at the Polytechnic University of Upper France since 2016. She serves as an elected member of the LARSH council since 2022 and has been a member of the National University Council (CNU) section 12 (German Studies) since 2019, initially as a titular member and subsequently as an elected substitute member. She is also an elected member of the research group council focused on Weimar culture since 2016.
Her research interests span German intellectual history, cultural history, critical theory, and exile studies with particular focus on figures such as Siegfried Kracauer, Walter Benjamin, and Hans Mayer. Her scholarly work explores the intersections of media theory, intellectual history, and cultural analysis, especially regarding German-Jewish intellectual history and the Weimar period. She has made significant contributions to understanding the theoretical frameworks of critical theory and their application to cultural phenomena.
Baumann has co-directed the 'Dialogues entre cultures' collection at Presses universitaires du Septentrion since 2022 and serves as co-responsible for the pedagogy of the Master Histoire, médias et médiations (H2M) program since 2023. She has also been a member of the editorial board of the journal Germanica since 2016, where she has coordinated special issues on topics including Kracauer and Benjamin's work on cinema, masses, and propaganda, as well as Marcel Reich-Ranicki's literary criticism.
Her publications demonstrate a consistent focus on German intellectual history, particularly examining the works of critical theorists in exile. The articles show her expertise in analyzing theoretical frameworks, historical narratives, and cultural phenomena through the lens of critical theory. Her research often bridges literary analysis with broader philosophical and historical contexts, revealing connections between intellectual history and contemporary cultural issues.
Baumann has received recognition through her election to various academic councils and her invitation to serve on the jury for the Pierre Grappin thesis prize in 2025. Her editorial work, including co-editing the 2024 volume 'Aufklärung – Hegel – Vormärz' with Marie-Ange Maillet and the 2023 volume 'Übersetzungsprozesse im Kontext von Exil und Postmigration' with Irène Cagneau and Nadine Rentel, demonstrates her standing in the academic community.
As an educator, she teaches across multiple programs including the Licence LEA, CPES, and various Master's programs focusing on German civilization and history, history of ideas, cultural history, and German language translation. Her teaching spans topics from post-reunification German economics to historical debates and ethical considerations in history.
