Frederic ATTAL

Frederic ATTAL is a Professor of Contemporary History at the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France (UPHF), where he directs the Institut Sociétés et Humanités (2020-2025). He is a member of the CRISS laboratory, axes 3 and 4, and was elected to the COFVU. Nationally, he serves as Vice-president of section 22 of the National University Council.

ATTAL's research focuses on the history of US public and cultural diplomacy in Europe, particularly academic exchanges through programs like Fulbright and philanthropic foundations. His work examines how these exchanges influenced both European perceptions of American foreign policy and academic systems. His secondary research areas include 20th century Italian history (politics, society, culture) and the history of intellectuals.

His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on cultural diplomacy during the Cold War, Italian intellectual history, and transnational exchanges between France and Italy. His scholarly output demonstrates expertise in analyzing how academic networks, foundations, and cultural institutions shaped European intellectual landscapes during the 20th century.
