Stephane Wolton is a Professor in Political Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where he holds a primary appointment in the Department of Government and serves as Director of the Political Science and Political Economy group at the STICERD Research Center. He maintains significant external affiliations as a Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research, Fellow at the Rimini Center for Economic Analysis, and Research Fellow at the Baffi Carefin Center at Bocconi University.
Wolton received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago in June 2014. His interdisciplinary training bridges economics and political science, forming the foundation for his methodological contributions to the field.
His research program centers on applying formal theory and quantitative methods to analyze democratic institutions, discrimination mechanisms, and autocratic governance structures. Wolton has pioneered the Theoretical Implications of Empirical Models (TIEM) framework, which fundamentally rethinks how formal theory interacts with empirical research. This approach examines three critical dimensions: parsing mechanisms behind empirical relationships, evaluating research designs for causal identification, and determining what empirical estimates actually measure in theoretical terms. His work challenges conventional approaches to knowledge accumulation in political science by demonstrating how empirical estimates must correspond to theoretically meaningful quantities to enable cumulative science.
Wolton's publications reveal a consistent methodological thread examining how institutional arrangements affect political outcomes through carefully specified theoretical models that directly inform empirical identification strategies. His research spans electoral systems, media effects, lobbying dynamics, and knowledge production in political science itself, always maintaining a rigorous connection between theoretical derivation and empirical testing.
As Editor-in-Chief of the Quarterly Journal of Political Science, Wolton shapes the field's scholarly discourse. His previous editorial roles at PSRM and Oxford Open Economics further demonstrate his leadership in advancing methodological rigor in political science publishing.
At LSE, Wolton teaches political economy across both the Department of Economics and Department of Government. He also serves as Course Convenor for "Understanding Discrimination," a specialized 3-week online masterclass addressing contemporary discrimination issues through multiple analytical lenses. His teaching directly reflects his research commitment to applying formal analytical tools to substantive political problems.
