Stephane Hue

Dr. Stephane Hue is an Associate Professor in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where he serves as Programme Director for the MSc Health Data Science. He is affiliated with the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Dynamics within the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health, and is a member of the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Hue completed his academic training with an Honors Degree in Cell Biology and Microbiology from Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France, followed by an MSc in Medical Molecular Microbiology at the University of Nottingham. He earned his PhD in the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 from University College London. After postdoctoral positions at the University of Oxford and University College London, he joined LSHTM in 2014, initially as a Lecturer in Phylodynamics before being promoted to Associate Professor in 2017.

Dr. Hue is a computational biologist specializing in pathogen genomics and the molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases. His research focuses on reconstructing pathogen transmission for surveillance and outbreak situations through the joint analysis of epidemiological and gene sequence data. While his work began with HIV-1, he has expanded his expertise to include Dengue virus, Hepatitis Delta Virus, SARS-CoV-2, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. His methodological approach involves implementing statistical models in phylogenetic studies to reconstruct time and spatial trends of viral transmissions.

Dr. Hue's publication record demonstrates a strong focus on viral genomics and molecular epidemiology, with recent work spanning multiple pathogens including Dengue virus, HIV-1, SARS-CoV-2, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. His research often involves international collaborations across Europe, Southeast Asia, and Africa, reflecting his work in diverse epidemiological settings. The methodological thread connecting his publications is the application of phylogenetic and phylodynamic approaches to understand transmission dynamics.

Dr. Hue has received research funding from various sources including Janssen Sciences Ireland UC, Nagasaki University, and the National Institutes of Health. His current projects focus on dengue transmission dynamics and HIV research.

As an educator, Dr. Hue has been teaching viral evolution, molecular epidemiology, and phylogenetics since 2008. At LSHTM, he teaches across multiple programs including the MSc Epidemiology, MSc Health Data Science, and MSc Medical Microbiology. He serves on several program committees and is an Associate Editor for the journal Virus Evolution.
