Prof. Dr. Stephan Nussberger is a full Professor of Biophysics and Head of the Department of Biophysics at the University of Stuttgart’s Institute of Biomaterials and Biomolecular Systems. He holds a PhD in Physics from the Technical University of Munich (1993), with postdoctoral training at Harvard University (1994–1995) and Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (1996–2003). His research focuses on mitochondrial protein translocation mechanisms, apoptosis regulation via BAX palmitoylation, and nanopore-based biosensing technologies. He teaches Biophysics, Bioanalytics, and Biomechanics of the Cell to undergraduate and graduate students in Technical Biology, Biomedical Engineering, and Sports programs.
- Key roles: Chair of Biophysics (since 2003), Head of Stuttgart Research Center for Systems Biology
- Research interests: Mitochondrial membrane translocase (TOM complex), synthetic biology applications, single-molecule microscopy, and cancer cell apoptosis mechanisms
He has led major initiatives such as the BMBF-funded Clusters4Future Nanodiag BW and the Baden-Württemberg Foundation’s Functional Nanostructures program. Over 200 publications span structural biology, biochemistry, and biophysics, with notable work in Nature Materials, Science Advances, and PNAS. Awards include DFG and EMBL fellowships.
