Dr. Stephan Moll is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. His clinical practice focuses on coagulation and classical hematology, with particular expertise in thrombosis and anticoagulation. He serves as Medical Director of the UNC Blood Clot Education Program Clot Connect and leads the UNC Athletes and Blood Clots Program.
Dr. Moll received his medical degree from Freiburg University in Germany. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine and a hematology-oncology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center (1989-1996), including a clinical coagulation fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill (1994-1995). Prior to joining UNC in 1999, he worked in clinical coagulation at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany (1997-1999).
His primary research interests include clinical trials on new anticoagulants, optimizing established anticoagulant therapies, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, and postthrombotic syndrome. Dr. Moll has a special focus on unusual thromboses (cerebral/sinus vein, retinal vessel, splanchnic vein thrombosis) and unusual thrombophilias (antiphospholipid antibodies, rare compound thrombophilias). A major professional commitment is clinical-medical education of patients, healthcare professionals, and the public about blood clots and clotting disorders.
Analysis of Dr. Moll's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on venous thromboembolism management across diverse patient populations including obese patients, cancer patients, and athletes. His work spans clinical trials, consensus guidelines, and patient-centered research examining preferences and concerns regarding anticoagulation therapy. The research demonstrates expertise in both clinical management and educational aspects of thrombosis care.
Dr. Moll is a co-founder of the National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) and serves on the board of the Anticoagulation Forum (AC-Forum). He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters on blood clotting disorders and has maintained a Q/A section on thrombosis for the non-profit website fvleiden.org since 2001.
He founded the UNC Blood Clot Education Outreach Program (Clot Connect) in 2010 and established the Athletes and Blood Clots Program with three primary goals: providing comprehensive care to athletes with blood clots, creating educational resources for athletes and their support teams, and supporting research in this specialized area. Dr. Moll is deeply committed to mentoring trainees in hematology and coagulation-related fields.
