Sten Ebbesen

Sten Ebbesen is Professor of Greek and Latin with special regard to the Aristotelian Tradition at the University of Copenhagen's Saxo Institute, a position he has held since 2011. Previously, he served as Distinguished Associate Professor ("docent") of Classics (1991-2011) and Associate Professor of Classics (1973-1991) at the same institution. He has been continuously employed at the University of Copenhagen since 1972, initially at the Institute of Greek and Latin Medieval Philology and its successor institutes.

His research spans the history of philosophy and linguistics from ancient to medieval periods, with particular expertise in Greek and Latin language studies and the Aristotelian tradition. Ebbesen has made significant contributions to medieval philosophical scholarship, especially regarding medieval logic and semantics.

Ebbesen has received notable recognition including Einar Hansen's Prize for eminent research in the humanities (1991) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Gothenburg (2013). He has served as Fellow of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters since 1989.

As an academic leader, Ebbesen has headed departments (1982-86, 1989-99), chaired research networks including the Nordic Network for Graduate Studies in Greek & Latin (1994-1998), and has been instrumental in organizing international conferences on medieval philosophy. Since 2009, he has led the Centre for the Aristotelian Tradition at the Saxo Institute and participated in the 'Representation and Reality' project since 2013.

Ebbesen maintains significant editorial responsibilities, serving as editor for Corpus Philosophorum Danicorum Medii Aevi since 1966 (Editor-in-chief since 1982), Editor-in-chief of the Buridan Society's edition of Buridan's Summulae, and Editor of Cahiers de l'Institut du moyen-âge grec et latin since 1982.
