Stella Nair is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at UCLA. She holds core faculty positions in the Archaeology Interdepartmental Program and the Center for 17th and 18th Century Studies. She is affiliated with the American Indian Studies Center, CMRS-Center for Early Global Studies, and the Latin American Institute. Trained as an architect and architectural historian, her research focuses on Indigenous communities in the Americas, emphasizing material culture, cross-cultural exchange, and spatial theory. Her work spans fieldwork in Bolivia, Mexico, Peru, and the U.S. Midwest, with ongoing projects in the South Central Andes.
Education: Ph.D. and M.Arch. from UC Berkeley. Notable publications include At Home with the Sapa Inca (2015) and The Stones of Tiahuanaco (2013). She directs the Andean and Architecture Laboratories at UCLA’s Cotsen Institute, fostering student and researcher collaboration. Awards include the Rome Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and UCLA’s Research Excellence Award. Current projects include Inca Architecture: A Woman’s World and The Forgotten Canopy, exploring gendered spaces and ephemeral architecture.
Awards and grants: Overseen by organizations such as the Guggenheim Foundation, Getty Foundation, and Dumbarton Oaks. Advises working groups on Andean studies, Indigenous material culture, and architectural theory.
