Stein Roar Mathisen is a Professor at the Department of Language and Culture, UiT The Arctic University of Norway. His research focuses on cultural heritage, Sámi and Kven identity, Arctic tourism, and postcolonial narratives.
- Current projects include TRUCOM (Tourism in Cultural Conflict Zones) and IMMKven (Research on Kven Cultural Heritage).
- He is a member of the Narrating the Postcolonial North research group.
His work examines how indigenous traditions are commodified in tourism, the role of folklore in shaping ethnic identities, and the impact of colonial histories on contemporary cultural practices. Publications include studies on Sámi shamanism, Kven cultural representation, and Arctic heritage festivals.
Projects and collaborations span institutions like Universitetsforlaget and UiT Norges arktiske universitet, with interdisciplinary engagement in anthropology, ethnography, and cultural studies.
