Stefano Ugel is an Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine, Immunology Section of the University of Verona, where he has been employed since November 2016. His academic position falls under the MEDS-02/A - Experimental Medicine and Pathophysiology sector with research focus in immunology (ERC sectors LS6_1, LS6_2, and LS6_3 covering innate immunity, adaptive immunity, and immune response regulation).
His research interests focus on tumor immunology, specifically investigating biological mechanisms that regulate immune response dysfunction in the tumor microenvironment and developing innovative approaches for active and passive immunotherapy. His work encompasses new immunotherapeutic approaches based on DNA vaccines, dendritic cells or peptides, adoptive cell therapeutic approaches using anti-TERT T cells, cellular and molecular networks mediating immunosuppression with emphasis on myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC), and the role of MDSCs in the metastatic process.
Dr. Ugel teaches across multiple programs including Combined Bachelor's + Master's degree in Medicine and Surgery, Biotechnology, Dentistry, and various specialized medical training courses. His teaching portfolio includes Immunology, Introduction to Pathology and Immunology, Tumor Immunology and Immunomodulation, General Pathology, and Human Pathology courses.
He holds several institutional duties including membership on the Faculty Board of PhD in Inflammation, Immunity and Cancer, Council for the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery, Council for the Degree Course in Biomedical Laboratory Techniques, and Council for the Degree Course in Dentistry. Additionally, he serves as a scientific component of the Organismo preposto al benessere degli animali (OPBA) and is involved in research quality assurance as Incaricato AQ Ricerca.
