Stefanie R. DeVito is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Delaware, serving as Interim Director of the Interdisciplinary Science Learning Labs. Her academic roles focus on enhancing undergraduate education through innovative teaching methods and interdisciplinary approaches.
Dr. DeVito holds a B.S. from the State University of New York at Binghamton, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She completed postdoctoral research at the University of Kansas.
Her research interests center on scientific teaching and improving undergraduate biology education. This includes developing peer mentoring programs to support student learning and integrating biology with chemistry for freshmen. She also focuses on enhancing scientific communication skills aligned with Vision and Change guidelines. Previously, her work explored how viral infections affect host cell metabolic pathways.
Recent publications focus on innovative teaching methods, such as podcast projects to enhance science communication, addressing misconceptions in biology education through viral infection studies, and exploring viral mechanisms like protein glycosylation. Her earlier research investigated antiviral agents and cardioprotective drug discovery.
Dr. DeVito has been honored by the Faculty Senate for Excellence in Teaching and Advising (2023). She mentors students in peer mentoring initiatives and contributes to grants and professional development in STEM education. As Interim Director of the Interdisciplinary Science Learning Labs, she leads efforts to foster collaborative, interdisciplinary scientific education.
