Stefan Wermter is a Full Professor in Computer Science at the University of Hamburg, where he directs the Knowledge Technology research group and serves as Head of the Knowledge Technology Institute. He is President of the European Neural Network Society (ENNS) and coordinates major research initiatives including the International Doctoral Network TRAIL and the DFG Collaborative Research Centre Transregio 169 on Crossmodal Learning.
His education includes a Diplom from the University of Dortmund (1987), an MSc from the University of Massachusetts (1989), a PhD from the University of Hamburg (1993), and a Habilitation from the University of Hamburg (1998). Prior to his current position, he was Professor at the University of Sunderland (1998-2010).
Wermter's research focuses on nature-inspired neural systems for intelligent agents. His work combines neuroscience principles with artificial intelligence to develop adaptive knowledge discovery systems, multimodal learning agents, and neurocognitive robots. Key themes include hybrid neural-symbolic representations, crossmodal learning, and socially aware human-robot interaction.
He has received the Fellowship of the German Academic Exchange Service and leads significant projects like SWEET (socially aware service robots), TRAIL (transparent AI systems), TERAIS (Slovakian AI excellence initiative), and MoReSpace (robot peripersonal space modeling).
Wermter founded and chairs the International MSc Programme in Intelligent Adaptive Systems. He leads the Knowledge Technology laboratory developing robots like NICO and NICOL, and collaborates with institutions including IIT Genoa and Comenius University.
