Stefan Szücs is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Political Science at the University of Gothenburg's Department of Social Work, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. His research focuses on governance, public sector coordination, health and social care integration, and democracy in public administration. He has led numerous research projects funded by organizations such as the Swedish Research Council (FORTE), VINNOVA, and the European Union. His work examines challenges in public service delivery, including workload management in healthcare, police, and social work settings, as well as strategies for collaborative governance in aging populations. Szücs has authored over 50 publications in journals like Governance and Local Government Studies, and he teaches quantitative methods and public administration at both graduate and undergraduate levels. His current projects address integrated care innovation and the role of collaborative capacity in improving aging populations' quality of life. He has served on review boards for academic publishers and international conferences, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to public policy and organizational behavior.
Education: PhD in Political Science (University of Gothenburg, 1998).
Research Interests: Szücs explores frontline workers' coping strategies, organizational change in public sectors, and the intersection of innovation and governance. His recent work highlights how performance information and collaborative mechanisms influence policy implementation in health, social care, and economic growth contexts. He investigates democratic accountability in strategic coordination bodies and the impact of organizational reforms on employee well-being.
Grants & Projects: Major projects include Sustainable Quality Coordination (FORTE, 2018–2021) and Cooperation Capacity and Quality in Ageing (FORTE, 2022–2025). He has also studied the effects of reorganization on public sector employees' mental health and the role of innovation governance in regional development.
Teaching: Course director for quantitative methods (doctoral level) and advanced courses in social work management. He has developed pedagogical strategies emphasizing case-based learning and critical analysis of public sector challenges.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with the CHEFiOS project (Managerial Health and Effectiveness in Public Sector) and the U-GOT KIES innovation ecosystem center. Engaged with interdisciplinary networks like the International Political Science Association’s Local-Global Relations committee.
