معرفی
Stefan Pöhlmann is a Professor and Head of the Infection Biology Unit at the German Primate Center (DPZ) in Göttingen, Germany, with a concurrent professorship at Georg-August-University Göttingen. His research is centered on viral pathogenesis, host cell interactions, and therapeutic development for emerging and zoonotic viruses.
His major research interests include influenza viruses, coronaviruses (SARS-CoV-2, MERS-CoV), Ebola virus, and primate herpesviruses. He investigates viral entry mechanisms, focusing on host proteases like TMPRSS2 and furin, and explores the development of antiviral strategies such as defective interfering particles and broad-spectrum inhibitors. His work bridges molecular virology, host-pathogen interactions, and translational applications.
His recent publications highlight critical contributions to understanding SARS-CoV-2 entry, revealing the roles of ACE2 and TMPRSS2, and evaluating potential therapeutics. His research spans structural biology, cell culture modeling, and in vivo pathogenesis, demonstrating a multidisciplinary approach to combating emerging infectious diseases.
Stefan Pöhlmann is affiliated with several graduate programs under the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB), including Emerging Infectious Diseases, Genome Science, Molecular Biology, Molecular Medicine, and Genes in Development, Disease and Evolution, indicating active involvement in training and mentoring.
He leads an active research group at the DPZ, focusing on developing diagnostic tools and predictive models for viral transmissibility. His team employs advanced techniques in virology, cell biology, and glycobiology to dissect viral mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets.
