Stefan Möllerherm

Dr. Stefan Möllerherm serves as a Lecturer at the Georg Agricola University of Applied Sciences in Bochum, Germany, teaching in the Master’s programs for Geoengineering and Post-Mining (since 2019) and Mineral Resource and Process Engineering (since 2018). He concurrently holds a research management position at the university’s Post-Mining Research Centre since 2016, focusing on methane emissions and structural transition in former mining regions.

His academic credentials include a Doctorate in Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from RWTH Aachen (1999), a Dipl.-Wirt.Ing. in business administration from FernUniversität Hagen (1995–1999), and a Dipl.-Ing. in Mining Engineering from RWTH Aachen (1989–1995), preceded by mining mechanic training at Preussag Anthrazit GmbH.

Möllerherm’s research centers on methane utilization from abandoned mines, risk management in post-mining landscapes, and regional structural transformation. His work integrates environmental remediation with energy solutions, notably exploring mine water geothermal potential and satellite-based monitoring systems. Recent publications demonstrate interdisciplinary rigor spanning mining engineering, environmental science, and socio-economic transition, with emphasis on the Ruhr region’s coal-mining legacy.

He actively contributes to international policy frameworks as a member of the EU DG Environment’s Technical Advisory Group on Risk Management in Extractive Sectors, the UN ECE Coal Mine Methane Experts Group, and the Euracoal Technical Research Group, driving innovation in sustainable post-mining practices.
