Dr. Stefan Möckel is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Environmental and Planning Law at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ since 2012. He co-leads the thematic area Governing transformations towards sustainable agrifood systems and heads the Working Group Land Use, Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity (2020–2022). His research focuses on environmental law, bioeconomy governance, and legal frameworks for sustainable land use, including nature conservation, water management, and soil protection.

Stefan is involved in cross-sectional initiatives like the Working Group on Sustainable Nitrogen Management (2019–2023) and the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (2022–2024). His research bridges legal, economic, and ecological dimensions of sustainability, with a focus on policy instruments and governance structures.
