Stefan Jopp

Dr. Stefan Jopp is a Junior Research Group Leader in the Department of Life, Light & Matter (LL&M) at the University of Rostock, leading the Carbohydrate Chemistry Group. He completed his doctorate at the University of Rostock and held a postdoctoral position at Tottori University, Japan, under a JSPS scholarship. In January 2025, he completed his Habilitation, qualifying for a professorship.

His research centers on carbohydrate-based ionic liquids (CHILs), focusing on their synthesis, structure-property relationships, and applications in green and sustainable chemistry. His work spans organocatalysis, biocatalysis (e.g., with Novozym 435), polymer chemistry, and the development of biocompatible hydrogels. He investigates CHILs as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional solvents and catalysts, emphasizing biodegradability and low toxicity.

His recent publications highlight trends in asymmetric organocatalysis, Pd-complex ligand design, hydrogel development, and biocompatibility testing of ionic liquids. The research integrates experimental synthesis with analytical techniques like NMR and X-ray crystallography.

Dr. Jopp actively supervises PhD and Master’s students, including Sina, Paul, Mirai, and Johannes.
