Stefan Hoops is a Research Associate Professor at the Biocomplexity Institute of Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). He joined the institute in 2000 after working as a software developer at Schumann Consulting Corporation in Germany (1995–2000). From 2007 to 2009, he served as an editor for the Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML).
