Stefan H. Uhlig is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on eighteenth-century and romantic European writing, art, aesthetics, and material culture. Uhlig previously served as a Fellow and Director of Studies at King's College, Cambridge, and will be the Derek Brewer Visiting Fellow at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in Spring 2025.
Uhlig holds a PhD, MA, and BA from the University of Cambridge. His academic career includes roles at Corpus Christi College and King's College, Cambridge. He teaches courses such as COM 210 German Literary Worlds, COM 168A Romanticism, and COM 142 The Romantic Self(ie), emphasizing comparative approaches to literature, aesthetics, and cultural history.
His research interests intersect with literary historiography, aesthetic theory, and the materiality of art. Notable works include Rhetoric, Poetics, and Literary Historiography: The Formation of a Discipline at the Turn of the Nineteenth Century (2024), which examines the disciplinary foundations of literary study. Uhlig co-edited Persuasion after Rhetoric in the Eighteenth Century and Romanticism (2024), awarded the Jean-Pierre Barricelli Prize for outstanding contributions to romanticism studies.
His publications explore figures like Goethe, Wordsworth, and Kant, analyzing themes such as affect theory, literary ethics, and interdisciplinary methodologies. Uhlig’s work bridges historical analysis with contemporary critical theory, reflecting his engagement with global literary traditions and transnational intellectual networks.
