معرفی
Dr. Stefan Georges serves as a Researcher at the Institute of Philosophy within the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Wuerzburg, where he has been employed since 2005. He concurrently contributed to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences' "Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus" project from 2013 to 2023.
His academic credentials include:
- Master of Arts in Medieval History, Auxiliary Historical Sciences and English Philology (1999, University of Frankfurt am Main)
- Doctorate (Dr. phil.) in Philosophy (2005, University of Frankfurt am Main) with dissertation on Emperor Frederick II's falconry texts
Georges' research centers on medieval intellectual history, specializing in Arabic-Latin knowledge transmission and the material culture of scientific practices. His work examines philosophical commentaries (notably Averroes' Metaphysics commentary), falconry treatises like the Moamin tradition, and cross-cultural exchanges in the Mediterranean world. He employs philological and historical methodologies to analyze manuscript traditions and reception histories.
His publication record reveals consistent focus on medieval scientific texts, particularly Arabic-to-Latin translations of philosophical and zoological works. Georges frequently collaborates on interdisciplinary projects bridging history, philosophy, and philology, with emphasis on how medieval courts facilitated knowledge transfer between Islamic, Jewish, and Christian scholars.
Funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and Fritz Thyssen Stiftung supported his work on Cicero's 'Tusculanae disputationes' and non-object-directed intentionality. While no formal advisees are documented, his research roles involve mentoring junior scholars in collaborative projects.
Georges actively participates in the Institute's research clusters including the Focus Group on Greek-Arabic-Latin Tradition. Current projects involve editing Averroes' Metaphysics commentary and investigating Ptolemy's legacy through the 'Ptolemy Arabus and Latinus' initiative, continuing his exploration of pre-modern scientific networks.
