Prof. Dr. Stefan Feuser is a Heisenberg-Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Bonn, Germany, since 2022. He holds a Ph.D. (2008) and Habilitation (2017) in Classical Archaeology from the Universities of Münster and Rostock, respectively. His academic career includes roles as a Professor at Kiel University (2016–2022) and Assistant Professor at Rostock (2010–2016), alongside research fellowships at institutions like the German Archaeological Institute and Harvard University's Center for Hellenic Studies.
Feuser's research focuses on cities and urbanism in the Greek and Roman Mediterranean, particularly port cities, maritime infrastructure, and temporal practices in ancient urban environments. He investigates how social hierarchies, labor dynamics, and ecological factors shaped coastal settlements. His work bridges archaeology with interdisciplinary approaches, including geoarchaeology and environmental studies.
Notable grants include the Virtual Worlds in Teaching Archaeology (EU-funded, 2023–2026) and The Temporality of Ancient Cities (DFG, 2022–2025). His publications explore harbor cities, such as Hafenstädte im östlichen Mittelmeerraum (2020), and digital pedagogy, including the Discovering Greek & Roman Cities MOOC. Awards include the DFG Heisenberg Fellowship (2021) and a Feodor Lynen Fellowship (2019–2020).
Feuser leads projects on Pergamon's maritime satellites (e.g., Elaia) and integrates climate-neutral field research methodologies. His work emphasizes the intersection of ancient urbanism with modern environmental challenges.
