Stefan Bouzarovski is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Manchester and Director of the People and Energy Programme at Manchester Urban Institute. His research focuses on energy geographies, urban inequality, and sustainability science, with particular emphasis on confronting infrastructural and environmental injustices through policy-relevant research.
Bouzarovski's work examines: The intersection of energy systems and urban socio-spatial inequalities; Political and cultural dimensions of energy poverty; Comparative urban vulnerability across Europe, Asia and Africa; Governance of sustainability transitions; Infrastructural justice in energy systems. He has directed multiple large-scale EU and UKRI-funded projects on these themes.
He co-founded and chaired the European Union Energy Poverty Observatory and ENGAGER COST Action. His publications include monographs Energy Poverty (Palgrave, 2018), Retrofitting the City (Bloomsbury, 2016), and edited collections on energy justice. Recent work addresses transport-energy poverty linkages, community energy governance, and gendered dimensions of energy policy.
Bouzarovski has received significant recognition including being named an 'ordinary hero' in the European Commission's EU Protects campaign for combating energy poverty. He currently serves as Vice-Chair of ESRC's Grant Assessment Panel A and sits on editorial boards of Energy Research & Social Science, Energy and Buildings, and European Urban and Regional Studies.
