Dr. Stefan Andreasson is a Reader in Comparative Politics at Queen's University Belfast's School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics. He holds a BA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1996), an MA from Louisiana State University (1998), and a PhD from Arizona State University (2003). His research focuses on the political economy of development, with emphases on state-business relations in Africa, energy transitions, and American political development. He has been funded by the ESRC, British Academy, Nuffield Foundation, and DfE Global Challenges Research Fund.
Research interests include the political economy of development in post-colonial Africa, energy transitions and fossil fuel dynamics, and American energy politics. He teaches American Politics and the Global Political Economy of Energy at the undergraduate level, and contributes to MA modules on Global Political Economy and Research Design.
His work spans over 50 publications in journals such as Political Studies, Political Geography, and Energy Research & Social Science. Recent research examines the agency of oil companies in the energy transition and historical US energy policies. He supervises PhD students in energy politics, African development, and comparative political economy. Awards include the Carleton Graduate Fellowship and Golden Key Honor Society membership.
Grants and collaborations include projects on shale gas in the Global South, South Africa’s emerging market status, and Anglo-American conservatism in African development. His book Africa’s Development Impasse critically rethinks political economy frameworks for African transformation.
