Dr. Lucy Baker is a Visiting Professor at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) within the University of Sussex Business School. She holds a Senior Lecturer position in Environmental Geography at the Open University, UK. Her expertise spans development studies, political economy, and transitions to sustainability, focusing on renewable energy finance, electricity governance, and global production networks. She has conducted research in South Africa and multiple countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Education includes a PhD in Political Economy from the University of East Anglia (2012), an MSc in Development Studies from SOAS, and an MA in Spanish and French from the University of Edinburgh. She is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.
Research interests include the political economy of electricity, finance and renewable energy, and multi-scale governance of energy transitions. She has led grants such as the 'Sustainability and Inclusiveness of Mini-Grids in Africa' and contributed to projects like INNOPATHS on technology transitions. She previously edited the journal Geoforum and supervised PhD research on energy assemblages and hydropower dams.
Her recent publications address mini-grid development, energy access in sub-Saharan Africa, and South African energy governance. She emphasizes the interplay between global processes and local realities in shaping sustainable energy transitions.
