Dr. Stavros G. Drakos is a Professor of Medicine and Co-Director of the Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolism Center (CRMC) at the University of Utah Health & School of Medicine. He serves as Co-Director of the Heart Failure & Transplant Section and Medical Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program. Holding the H.A. & Edna Benning Presidential Endowed Chair, he leads the award-winning Utah Cardiac Recovery Program (UCAR) and co-directs the annual international Utah Cardiac Recovery Symposium (UCARS). A former NIH CCHS chair and visiting professor at global institutions, he has mentored numerous trainees now holding independent academic positions.
- University of Athens School of Medicine (MD, PhD)
- University of Utah (Heart Failure Fellowship, Cardiovascular Translational Research Fellowship)
- Harefield Heart Sciences Center/Imperial College London (HARP Program)
His research focuses on cardiac recovery in chronic and acute heart failure, utilizing clinical and biological studies in humans and animal models to enhance myocardial recovery. Key themes include mechanical circulatory support, mitochondrial metabolism, and reverse remodeling in heart failure patients. Over 15 recent articles highlight innovations in LVAD applications, cardiac transcriptomics, and metabolic therapies.
Scientific awards include the H.A. & Edna Benning Endowed Chair, NIH funding, AHA grants, European Union Marie Curie Fellowships, and the Top PhD Thesis Award from the University of Athens. His clinical expertise spans heart failure, transplantation, and MCS/VAD therapies, with practice licenses in both the US and EU.
Dr. Drakos directs NIH-funded research at the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and Training Institute (CVRTI) and collaborates with international teams to advance myocardial recovery science. His lab's work has established foundational protocols for mechanical unloading in heart failure and influenced global clinical practices through the UCAR program.
