Dr. Stanley Pogrow is a Research Professor of Educational Leadership at San Francisco State University (SFSU). He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Stanford University and has held prior positions at the University of Illinois, USC, and the University of Arizona. He is a leading scholar in educational leadership and equity, recognized by UCEA as a top scholar in the field.
His research focuses on reducing the achievement gap, particularly for low-income and minority students, and designing large-scale learning environments to accelerate their learning. He is the developer of the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) Project, a widely adopted program used in 2,600 schools across 48 states, which combines Socratic dialogue, drama, and technology. His work has been funded by major organizations, including the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education.
Dr. Pogrow has authored four books and over 110 articles/chapters, and has delivered 250+ presentations globally. He has debunked ineffective interventions for marginalized populations and advocates for evidence-based policy reforms. His $3 million in grants as sole PI has supported R&D for school reform initiatives.
Recent presentations include topics like reducing achievement gaps in math/science and leveraging new technologies for teaching and learning. He coordinates a joint doctoral program in Educational Leadership for Equity with UC Berkeley.
