Professor Staffan Josephsson holds a position as Professor of Occupational Therapy at Karolinska Institutet (KI), part of the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society. He completed his medical degree in occupational therapy at the Stockholm College of Health Sciences (now part of KI) in 1985 and earned his PhD in 1994 at KI with a thesis on dementia and everyday activities. His career includes roles as a senior lecturer and associate professor before becoming a full professor in 2011.
His research focuses on narrative methods in healthcare, emphasizing creativity, participation, and agency for individuals with chronic disabilities, dementia, and mental health challenges. Key areas include geriatric care, person-centered approaches, and the role of narrative in enhancing patient engagement. Josephsson leads the 'Narrative in Health and Social Care' research group, exploring how narrative practices improve dignity and participation in care settings.
Notable contributions include studies on care home environments, palliative care, and cultural perspectives in occupational therapy across Sweden, Norway, Japan, and Chile. He has secured grants from the Swedish Research Council and collaborates internationally. His work challenges traditional healthcare paradigms by prioritizing relational and narrative approaches over rigid institutional frameworks.
Josephsson teaches at the European Master’s in Occupational Therapy program, advocating for inclusive pedagogy and student creativity. His research output includes over 100 peer-reviewed articles, highlighting themes like dementia care, occupational participation, and narrative interventions. He serves on editorial boards, including the journal Occupation, Participation and Health.
