Stacy Morgan is a Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of American Studies at the University of Alabama. Her work bridges African American art history, folklore, and cultural studies. She holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. from Emory University. Key research areas include 20th-century visual arts, African American folklore, and the intersection of race, gender, and popular culture.
Her publications span monographs like Frankie and Johnny: Race, Gender, and the Work of African American Folklore in 1930s America and articles on figures such as Yvonne Wells and Hughie Lee-Smith. Awards include the 2021 McMillan Prize and 2018 Hand Prize for her interdisciplinary scholarship.
Teaching focuses on courses like African American Folk Art, Popular Culture in America, and Race & Essentialism. Her research often examines marginalized voices through material culture and historical narratives, emphasizing counter-memory and cultural resistance.
