Sonnet Retman is an Associate Professor in both the Department of American Ethnic Studies and the Department of Comparative History of Ideas at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on African American literature and culture, examining intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and class through interdisciplinary methodologies. She holds a joint appointment within the College of Arts & Sciences.
Research Interests:
- Analyzes racial representations and their impact on social power dynamics
- Explores cultural texts including literature, cinema, and music
- Interdisciplinary approach drawing from critical race studies, legal studies, feminist theory, cultural history, anthropology, and literary criticism
Current Projects: Working on a book about 1940s literary ethnographies that addressed racial segregation and counter-historical narratives of U.S. democracy during WWII.
Prior Work: Authored Real Folks: Race and Genre in the Great Depression (Duke 2011), analyzing racialized folk representations in 1930s documentary and satire genres.
