Stacy McGaugh is a Professor and Director of Astronomy at Case Western Reserve University's College of Arts and Sciences. He specializes in galaxy dynamics, cosmology, and the mass discrepancy problem, particularly focusing on low surface brightness galaxies and the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. His work has significantly advanced understanding of galaxy formation, rotation curves, and dark matter distribution through observational and theoretical studies.
McGaugh earned degrees from MIT, Princeton, and the University of Michigan. He held research fellowships at the University of Cambridge, Carnegie Institution of Washington, and Rutgers University. Prior to CWRU, he was a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research includes contributions to cosmic microwave background studies and the development of the SPARC database for galaxy rotation curves.
Key research interests include galaxy kinematics, dark matter halo properties, and testing alternative gravity theories like Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). His recent work explores HI gas dynamics in low surface brightness galaxies via the MHONGOOSE survey and addresses cosmological tensions like the Hubble constant discrepancy. McGaugh's studies frequently bridge observational data with numerical simulations to refine models of galaxy evolution and cosmic structure formation.
He has published extensively on topics such as radial acceleration relations, external field effects in modified gravity, and the role of baryonic feedback in galaxy halos.
