Dr. Stacy Atchley is a Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Baylor University, College of Arts & Sciences. She transitioned to academia in 1995 after seven years in the petroleum industry at Mobil and Exxon (now ExxonMobil). Her expertise spans sequence stratigraphy, petroleum geology, and terrestrial paleoclimatology. She leads research in unconventional Mesozoic/Paleozoic reservoirs in Alberta, Canada, and collaborates with the Baylor Terrestrial Paleoclimatology Research Group (TPRG) on paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
Education:
- Ph.D., University of Nebraska - Lincoln
Research Interests: Energy geosciences, paleoclimate studies (fluvial geomorphology, pedology), stratigraphy, and geochemistry. Her work integrates field data from Canada and the U.S. Southwest, focusing on climate-landscape interactions and reservoir prediction using machine learning.
Recent Article Trends: Recent publications emphasize machine learning applications in facies modeling (e.g., Duvernay Formation studies) and paleoclimate analysis (e.g., K/Pg boundary hydrology, Maastrichtian climate shifts). She bridges industry and academic research, addressing both reservoir optimization and fundamental environmental changes.
Labs/Teams: Leads Baylor’s Applied Petroleum Studies program and collaborates with TPRG on interdisciplinary projects. Students gain skills in fieldwork, geochemical analysis, and computational methods, preparing them for careers in industry, academia, or government.
